Volunteer Applications & Selection Process

SCI–USA coordinates volunteer placements in close cooperation with the international SCI network and partner organizations. Application procedures, review timelines, and requirements may vary depending on the project type, host country, and length of stay. Applicants are encouraged to apply early and carefully review all requirements.

Review Process & Timelines

Once an application is submitted, SCI–USA reviews the materials and, when appropriate, forwards them to the hosting SCI branch or partner organization. The review process may include:

  • An initial application screening

  • One or more interviews (online or by phone)

  • Additional documentation requests, depending on the project

Review timelines vary by project and destination, but applicants should generally expect the process to take several weeks. For long-term projects, early submission is strongly recommended, as placements often involve additional preparation and coordination.

Visa & Travel Arrangements

Visa requirements differ by country and project length. Accepted volunteers are responsible for securing the appropriate visa and travel documents. SCI–USA and partner organizations provide guidance where possible, but applicants should allow sufficient time for visa processing and related interviews at consulates or embassies.

Additional arrangements—such as insurance, travel planning, and pre-departure preparation—will be communicated after acceptance.

Important Information for Non-U.S. Citizens

Non-U.S. citizens should contact the SCI branch or partner organization in their country of residence for application guidance. To find the appropriate contact, select “My Country of Residence” and then navigate to “My Branch.”
